Part 2 of the podcast interview on the SG4smartmedication project was released at the beginning of this month. In addition to Wolfgang Mondorf (medicine) and Christoph Hoog Antink (research), Andreas Rösch joins the panel this time, adding specialist knowledge from industry.
Motion analysis in a medical context
There are frameworks that enable motion analysis using simple smartphone cameras, but they were primarily developed for entertainment purposes. There is therefore considerable potential in transferring methods from a non-medical use case into a medical context, for example to create quantitative analyses.
Plan the difficult, be ambitious, reach for the stars
Interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, physicians, and computer scientists can contribute to better care for people with chronic diseases by expanding the medical spectrum with innovative new methods such as thermal imaging cameras — or, indeed, motion analysis.
What’s more: if expensive procedures such as MRI scans are needed less often thanks to motion analysis, research can contribute to the cost-effectiveness of medicine by saving massive costs.
About SG4smartmedication
Our project “SG4smartmedication, opens in a new tab” (Serious Games for smart medication – games with educational content that are integrated into the hemophilia app smart medication) is funded by the State of Hesse and aims to support patients with hemophilia as part of their (physio)therapy. Using a smartphone camera, for example, integrated into a playful app, patients can record themselves during exercise and receive live feedback from the digital assistant if something in their movements could be improved. Once the training is successfully completed, points can be collected for extra motivation.
In other words, we use non-intrusive sensor technology and serious games concepts combined with artificial intelligence to improve patient monitoring and therapy.
